I'd never seen a full Chaplin film until about 6 months ago when I started working through the IMDB Top 250...

....but I absolutely LOVED City Lights, Gold Rush and Modern Times.

I'll be picking up a couple others during the upcoming Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble. The Great Dictator and Monsieur Verdoux.

I also enjoyed Buster Keaton's The General.

But Chaplin's work is my favorite.

Many of the full movies are available on Youtube as well :blessed:

Obviously everyone has different tastes, and silent films is altogether a wholly unique genre, but I think they're incredibly watchable.

I was VERY unsure about how I would like them before watching Modern Times, but I watched 3 more Chaplin films within a couple weeks :yeshrug:

Nosferatu?

I watched it and had a similar reaction as you did.

Chaplin's work is much more accessible imo. It's got a clever/funny/witty/comic edge to it that more serious silent films lack.

Chaplin movies work because slapstick never ages. It's like Looney Tunes

Check out Howard Hawks' A Girl in Every Port. It's pretty risque, and modern for its time.

He should have kept making talkies. Monsieur verdoux and a king in new york were both good.(haven't seen limelight yet)

Cosign op though.
