some silent films are watchable... best ones i've seen were 'the penalty' w/ lon chaney, and george melies' short films...scorsese's 'hugo' was about him
seen a few chaplin flicks...i liked 'the immigrant'

When I was babysitting for my sister I asked the kids (then 7 and 12) what they wanted to watch they said Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean.

Props to them :ehh:

silent films are interesting cause they were trying to figure out what to do w/ the medium. alot of the movies vary in length & some are like 4-5 hours long. plus alot of the early ones had no creativity whatsoever... a kid steps on a gardener's hose= that was considered an early comedy...but Melies came through & crushed the building...he was coming up with advanced special effects & editing techniques by accident.....i also like a few buster keaton movies cause he did alot of stuntwork & took no shortcuts...peep the movie 'neighbors'....

also interesting what some of the first movies were from different cultures. alot of the early movies from eastern euro countries were realistic war films, germans were obsessed with horror, the first black film was a response to birth of a nation & also had an anti-religious theme

Since we can only go by the surviving films, Europe had the silent movie game on lock.

Not silent but chaplin related(intead of making a whole new plat thread)

Watched, a countess in hong kong which he wrote and directed. Too bad he was too old to play the lead role.
