He doesn’t have a household name like Larry Hoover, Jeff Fort or other infamous leaders of Chicago gangs.

Lawrence “Big Law” Loggins kept a low profile — no mentions in the newspaper and no arrests since he was released from prison in 2009.

But he was the head of the Black Disciples, one of Chicago’s most notorious gangs, police say. And he was trying to consolidate power before he was assassinated Wednesday night, according to law-enforcement sources.

Now the Chicago Police Department is bracing for a potential bloodbath on the South Side in retaliation for Loggins’ murder, officials said Friday. Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the department, said investigators will try to prevent those revenge killings.

Message boards on the Internet were buzzing Friday about the possible motive for the killing. Rapper Lil Durk tweeted out “RIP Big Law.”

Loggins, 46, was shot in the head at 9:08 p.m. Wednesday as he stood near a Nissan Rogue in the 7100 block of South Union Avenue, police said. He was found face-down on the driver’s seat of the SUV.

A man wounded in the shooting told police the assailants ran through an empty lot and fled in a gray Infiniti sedan.

Loggins, who also used the last name Lee, went to prison for a 1989 gang-related murder in Lowe Park on the South Side, records show. He was released in 2009, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections. Unlike most gang members, he doesn’t even have an arrest photo in the police department’s computer database.

Tio Hardiman, former director of the anti-violence group CeaseFire Illinois, said Loggins approached him after he got out of prison. Hardiman, now president of Violence Interrupters Inc., said Loggins became a “violence interrupter.”

“Lawrence interrupted at least 20 conflicts that could have turned deadly” while he was with CeaseFire, Hardiman said. “Lawrence had another side — he was a peacemaker.”

But law-enforcement sources said Loggins was trying to consolidate power over the Black Disciples in the Englewood, Gresham and Grand Crossing police districts on the South Side. He wanted to return a corporate governance structure to the street gang, they said.

From the 1970s through the mid-2000s, the gang’s leaders had issued orders to lower-level members through a rigid hierarchy.

Gang experts have estimated that 15,000 people were members of the Black Disciples during that period. Low-level members who ignored orders were beaten or killed and were required to pay a “street tax” from the proceeds of their drug deals and other crimes.

Today, independent factions of the Black Disciples operate on the South Side and the younger generation of members has bristled at the idea of losing their autonomy, sources said.

On Wednesday, Loggins called junior members of the gang into a meeting and “chewed them out,” a source said. Some police officials believe he was killed as a result of that meeting.

At this point the gang situation is like Ancient China before it was unified

A strong emperor will have to rise up and conquer the whole scene before it becomes unified and orderly

I'm talking a niqqa like the Punisher rolling thru on some get down or lay down shyt and crushing any opposition to his empire

Cause explaining the merits of orderliness to drugged out kids ain't it. They not gonna obey just cause someone tells them something

These young nikkas dont honor those gang bylaws or chiefs anymore. Got GDs BDS, Stones; etc all running in the same sets. Snitching on their gang activity on social media, and making hits with no approval

Thread title is misleading. Paints him as a reformed felon who was out of the game tryna play peacemaker. He was a gang leader who stepped on the toes of too many gangsters.

Peace maker or whether he was just trying to get order back while still having power. I don't feel bad for him at all, these are the youth that he created and tore down instead of building up. God finally got his ass,god is going to get you every time once you know better and are still doing wrong. I'm sure he tried to reform kids for a while but decided he liked being a big shot better, and went against that because it was easier. Let the lord do with him what he will from here,if anything:respect:

Thread title is misleading. Making it seem like he just got out a month ago like Cutty from “The Wire” all disoriented from how the streets changed.

Dude been out for 10 years. He knows what’s going on in the streets. Seems like he just miscalculated the expected result. This will never change. With all of the murders that have taken place, my guess is that those personal beefs are just as responsible for the violence as drug turf wars. If drug sales/turf was behind the violence then yes you it would be possible to recreate structure since the universal objective among all participants is getting money and avoiding prison. But now people kill for revenge, over females, social media, to create a reputation, to sell records, for money, bc of drug addiction etc. no one person no matter how many shooters you have or money you can spend, is going to make all of that go away.

It's no longer a gang. Just a bunch of random dudes under the same flag. There's no unity or structure

Sounds like he was trying to take it back to 1993 with it. Back when gangs (at least in chicago) still had chiefs, ministers etc. Under the guise of community activism

But them shorties said"weve heard this story before:ufdup:"
