First off, rappers were dressed fukking weird for a minute back then because hip-hop came up alongside the NY punk/club/disco scene. So hip-hop cats didn't have an identity initially, they were emulating other fashions.

However, RUN DMC and similar groups put an end to that shyt almost immediately, and by the late 80s it was pretty much completely phased out.

Reference the late 70s, early 80s as a reason why rappers are dressed weird in 2013, brehs.
