Will we be unseated by China's rise sooner than later?

White House Considers Restricting Chinese Researchers Over Espionage Fears

Supposedly a Chinese student at Duke was working on an experimental cloaking tech and may have gone back to China and shared that info with the Chinese gov't. Now the U.S. is so worried that it's thinking about restricting visa (work and student) applications and also restricting what these students can actually work on. I'm beginning to believe that a large part of the problem has been America's attitude toward unrestricted capitalism. It has seem to take over actual national security.

Aside from a radical change in how the U.S has engaged with the world, it seems that China will cement its position as a regional power in the next 10 years and probably the top superpower in the next 50.

This is an artifact of the commoditization [sic] of our university system. Since there are plenty of foreigners willing to send their kids to US schools at full price, universities are catering to the world market instead of citizens. Americans can't compete with the other 95% of the planet for free market expensive education. We've got grad programs that are made up of vastly more foreign students, especially in high tech, because Americans can't afford to take 2-4 years with minimal pay to work on a grad degree.

It only folllows that these students will start being exploited to start feeding intel back to their countries. After a while, foreign students will have such a power base that our univerisity system will be CONTROLLED by foreign entities.

Yet another example where American greed comes back to bite us in the ass.

Actually it doesn't, we do a lot of assembly in Asia to save on labor costs but we still create a lot of tech in the Western world, just ship the components to Asia for be soldered and packaged.

The US and China rivalry is very similar to the U.K. and Germany rivalry in the late 19th and early 20th century. Right now it’s 1890. The gap is closing. Sooner than later China will be up to par with the US as Germany was with the U.K. by 1914. The next 25 years is going to be interesting.

Before the US could hoard engineers and sell them the idea of the American Dream. Immigrants aren’t falling for that nonsense anymore. They are practically engaging in what this country has done for quite some time: come in, and take everything even the ones bolted down. What’s awesome is that they’re citizens too. But you can’t really say anything because they spent their $500,000 on their visa.
