This is a boneheaded policy though, regardless of how much of a heads-up players get. Weed is a hell of a lot less harmful than the fistfuls of painkillers some of these dudes take to get through the season.
I can understand the league discouraging hard drug use because of legitimate health risks they pose to players, but even then, the focus ought to be on treatment rather than punishment.
