People like this stand by when they see the abuse but only speak up when the abuser no longer serves them a benefit in their life. When they are cast out of the circle. Then the issue becomes their motives for talking. Are they just telling the truth and why now? Is it because they are no longer cool or are they just lying to bring down a person by confirming foul rumors that already exist. Now credibility is an issue as well as motivation. Scrutiny comes into play regarding the source.
