chris webber lebron james kobe bryant free agency los angeles lakers
Pretty interesting view from 2 Hall of Famers. LeBron would be taking a risk joining the Lakers. All the great players in the past that have played for LA have won championships. If he doesn't win a title with the Lakers, he runs the risk of damaging his legacy.
During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Webber touched on James' free agency and said that LeBron shouldn't go to the Lakers because of the stature and presence of Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles.
"Oh, you're going to go play for Kobe?" Webber said on the show.
Webber makes a valid point about Bryant still being the man in Los Angeles even though he's retired. Bryant still occasionally hangs around the team and has even provided advice and mentorship to some of the young players on the Lakers. He of course doesn't own the team and isn't a coach, so it's not like James will actually be playing for Bryant if he signs with the Lakers like Webber said. But the point still stands and Webber's TNT colleague Reggie Miller offered a similar sentiment on his own recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show.
During his appearance, Miller noted that if James signs with the Lakers, he will essentially be playing in Bryant's shadow.
Reggie Miller: “I could see him moreso playing for the Clippers than I would the Lakers.
I don’t think he wants to follow in Kobe Bryant’s shadow. I think if he goes to the Clippers, right now he could be arguably the greatest Clipper ever in three to four years. If he plays three or four years for the Clippers, he would be the greatest….”
Dan Patrick: “You just think that he doesn’t want to follow in Kobe’s footsteps, and that’d be the biggest reason?”
Reggie Miller: “That’s a big shadow. Because if he doesn’t win, everyone’s going to be like ‘well, he’s not Kobe!’ And now the pecking order goes… regular fans are going to be like ‘Michael, then Kobe, and then probably LeBron,’ because he couldn’t deliver a championship to the Lakers.”
