Christian McCaffrey: It's "asinine" to say running backs don't matter - ProFootballTalk

In July 2018, the Rams made Todd Gurley the highest-paid running back with a four-year, $60 million contract extension. The Rams got two seasons, 31 games, including the postseason, 2,268 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns before cutting Gurley.

The Cowboys signed Ezekiel Elliott to a six-year, $90 million extension that made him the highest-paid running back in the league last September. He had his worst 16-game season as a pro, and his four rushes over 20 yards raised questions about where his explosiveness went.

The Panthers defended Christian McCaffrey‘s four-year, $64 million extension that made him the league’s highest-paid running back in average annual salary by saying he is “more than just a running back.”

McCaffrey, though, is fine with being called a running back, bristling when asked to respond to critics who claim the position doesn’t matter much in the NFL.

“That’s an asinine statement,” McCaffrey said on 610 Sports Radio on Thursday. “When you look around the league and you look at what the running back position has meant to certain teams, I don’t know when that narrative started happening. It used to be the running back and quarterback position were the highest-tiered guys on the field. I look at guys that I looked up to, guys like Emmitt Smith, guys like LaDainian Tomlinson. Emmitt Smith, he played 12-plus years. These guys played long [careers] and were at the forefront of being the team’s most important player. So you look at what guys like Derrick Henry did in the [Titans’] playoff run.

“I don’t know when that narrative started happening. You see it so much now, and you look at some of the most explosive players in the league, and they are running backs. So to me, I just think it’s not a very educated statement.”

McCaffrey, 23, rushed for 1,387 yards and added 1,005 receiving yards, while scoring 19 total touchdowns last season.

Runningbacks do matter. But it's a discussion of value.

And Christian McCaffrey in 2019 ranked 37th out of 47 in the league in YAC/Att (rushing yards after contact, per rush) at 1.8.
So he's not a particularly good at pushing the ball forward. What saves him is the fact that he can catch passes..and that makes him elite.

So when guys talk about RBs being overvalued, they're typically referring to guys who are 1 dimensional.
Todd Gurley is 1 dimensional and he's falling apart quickly.
Derrick Henry is 1 dimensional, but he's exceptional at moving the pile right now. So for the moment he is quite valuable.

If you're the Rams, you're better off with an Austin Ekeler type...even if he's a far lesser name.

Rule changes did this imo. You can't win a good amount of games without a QB now. Back in the 1990's and even early 2000s you could be a contender with the RB as your best player.

Probably.
It is far easier to be a QB now than it ever has been. That's why you're seeing all these mediocre QBs having better passing numbers than elite Qbs in the 80s and 90s.

Todd Gurley was not 1 dimensional.

His knees falling apart is what got him cut.

If he is fully healthy we win that superbowl imo

It's not that runningbacks don't matter per se, but there is so much talent that with a good offensive line you can have 3 good RBs and move the ball instead of leaning on 1 great one.

This is the real answer, its a consequence of the salary cap and the rest of the structures like the franchise tag.

That shyt is bad for the players and the union fumbled the bag this past year.

McCaffrey cashing out at the RB position means that tons of other superstar RBs will cash out in the future.

McCaffrey officially being classified as some superhybrid back gives other teams an excuse to NOT pay their future stud RB's. Its good that CMC is sticking up for the position

The "runningbacks don't matter" stance stems from the fact that they're easy to replace. You can find value at that position easier than any other position.

Combine that with having the shortest lifespan of any position and you get the current climate.

All I know is, kids who play football lucky as fukk right now. Cause growing up I remember like 99% of offenses in pop warner, middle school, and high school being basically all running plays. Some variation of the option or straight hand offs. Mothafukas never passed the ball. Passing seem so normal now for high school teams and even pop warner. Mothafukas be having air raid offenses and shyt. But back in the day, everyone was just running. Had to look at college or pros to see passing lol. That’s why I never played football like that. They put a nikka at wider recover when I was young, but I was like ain’t no damn passing plays :martin: But not like I wanted to be the running back or quarterback cause I ain’t taking no hits. Them nikkas be hitting hard. fukk that shyt. So I quit football early on. My auntie said a nikka hit me and knocked the wind out of me, and on the sideline I told the coaches I didn’t want to play no more. I don’t remember that story but I believe her. fukk that shyt. Hooping was my calling

guys that arent 3 down threats like him still get disrespected

look at how far Henry took TEN and they just tagged him. Bell and McCaf are rare guys who get the bread to match production
