So many religious freaks in sports

Many religious people in general. But athletes vocalize their faith often because they know they were blessed with exemplary attributes that enable them to make a great living and provide for their family. These guys are in the top 1% of 1% athletically so it makes sense to be humble and either credit their faith or their family for their success. I dont think it's so much that many of them are at church every sunday but rather that they are just extremely grateful
