Funny you mention this. I always wondered why Xmas always around winter solistice which is a Persian holiday from Ancient daysThe holidays aren’t made up, the major ones are based around the solstices and different stages of the harvest.
They just get rebranded to be more easily adapted into different cultures.
You can be a Debbie Downer and not enjoy this time of year because you think you’ve discovered some deep truth that most humans don’t know, or just get over yourself and enjoy the season, the same way that humans have been doing for thousands of years and will continue to do well after you’re no longer here.

The holidays are made up to placate the poorer folks and feed into collective hedonism in my opinion. Nothing more or less to me.The holidays aren’t made up, the major ones are based around the solstices and different stages of the harvest.

The solstices and equinoxes are naturally occurring cycles. These cycles don’t care if people gorge themselves, exchange gifts or become inebriated. The truth will be the truth until each one of us goes back home.
I can respect that point of view but that’s not what I see being exhibited. These cycles have a strong personal meaning in my life, I don’t take this time of year lightly. It’s not about what the cycles “care about”, it’s about tradition.
It’s easy to sit back now and be dismissive of the cycles, but before you could walk to the grocery store and grab whatever you wanted, the success or failure of a harvest cycle meant the difference between life and death.
We celebrate now the way our ancestors celebrated to carry on tradition and honor them.
As far as the “hedonism”, again you have to look at things from a agricultural perspective.
Before you could walk to the liquor store or corner store to grab a drink, you had to ferment your own alcohol.
If you harvested your grapes and barley in the summer, the wine and beer would be ready around this time of year.
So the celebrations were a little more turnt.
