Chrono Trigger is often cited as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, and we can't help but agree with this assessment. It somehow manages to feel surprisingly modern even all these years later. We aren't alone; as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix has revealed that the hugely influential game has moved more than five million units across the globe.

Spotted by My Nintendo News, Square Enix itself revealed the number right at the bottom of a celebratory blog post, and that's in Japanese. It's an interesting reminder of how things have changed in that time. We'll admit that our first reaction to that figure was surprise. Considering how much digital ink we've seen spilt praising the game in our lifetime, contributing not a little ourselves, the number seems quite quaint.

The last firm figures reported were back in 2018, and excluding PC sales, the game was sitting at around 3.5 million copies then. Compare that with, say, a modern AAA game and the discussion around whether or not two million players in two days means something was a failure. Obviously, budgets and expectations are vastly different; perhaps we should just turn back the clock and return to the glorious age of 16-bit pixel art games. You won't hear any complaints from us.

That's kind of crazy that such a well renowned RPG game sold only 5 million since it's release decades ago across MULTIPLE platforms. This game I feel would really benefit from a remake with at least visuals similar to Dragon Quest 13 or more realistic like Kingdom Hearts or FF.

A few things. RPGs were still niche and this was an expensive cartridge to produce. I had to pre-order it and go through 3 cycles before I got my copy.

The only other official releases were late cycle PSX and mid cycle Nintendo DS.

Sad, but not surprising. It came out in that weird part of the SNES lifespan where RPGs were selling themselves based on how many megs they were, and being priced accordingly. I definitely remember new copies ranging from $70 to $90 in 1995 money. depending on when and where you bought it. It was probably just too expensive. Combine that with the sequel being a little too weird for people, and the rereleases not being ones that made huge modernization style changes when they came out, and it never really had a point where it was really positioned to be a hit.

Sucks, because it really is one of Square's best games.
