Chuck Schumer Asks FBI To Investigate FaceApp

Wireless Lab, a company based in St. Petersburg, says it does not permanently store images, and does not collect troves of data -- only uploading specific photos selected by users for editing. "Even though the core R&D team is located in Russia, the user data is not transferred to Russia," a company statement reported by news site TechCrunch said. Mr Schumer however has asked that the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigate FaceApp. "I have serious concerns regarding both the protection of the data that is being aggregated as well as whether users are aware of who may have access to it," his letter reads.

We really are in the middle of a 'Red Scare'? Everything done and/or made by Russia must be assumed malevolent until proven otherwise?

Word? Why? Every Russian doing business with America is doing Putin's bidding?
It's xenophobia.

No, not "every" Russian doing business with America is doing Putin's bidding. But with Putin having gained enormous control over Russian capitalism and government over the more than 20 years he's held power, even to the point of imprisoning or killing those who did not do his bidding, and with Putin demonstrably opposed to American interests, it's worth maintaining healthy skepticism over any Russian collecting large amounts of American data until proven otherwise.

There are a hell of a lot of nations in this world that would be a lot better off if they treated American corporations with the same level of skepticism.

Don't app stores have oversight on what is allowed on their platforms? Not enough? The FBI has to single out all Russian/American business contracts for what the next 20, 30 50, 100 years?

That's fair, but isn't Chuck just grandstanding here? When did the FBI ever need permission to investigate from Congress? And why did there need to be a public announcement about it. Aren't we tipping our hand to Russia with that?

I couldn't care less about Schumer. I'm just talking practically about why we should be protecting our data in general and from Russia specifically.
