Moderates. Ugh. When you're Republican lite and the other option is a republican, in most cases, you will always lose. Folks like Manchin are the exception .

It's not even being about a 'moderate' either. You can be a moderate and speak to the needs of rural America. Rural America has been hit with monopolization, with corporate farming, lack of rural health options, etc... the Dems have to speak to that and also admit they dropped the ball on that shid. And then also make the case that the GOP that controls these states are making their lives worse off for profit. Obama in 2008 did the best in rural America for a Dem since the 1970s.
Her state has shifted more conservative, yes. But winning state-wide was still do-able.

I don't know. It feels like there's always a social issues trap for Dems no matter how much they speak to the economy. Even if you hand over piles of money for farmers in earmarks, once Republicans come in on how much X,Y, and Z issue is being forced on you by east coast liberals, the rural Americans bail to their conservative leanings.
The same way they'll love healthcare under ObamaCare called something else, but once Obama's name is mentioned they rebel against it.
Then the Republicans come in and gut it to undermine it, and blame Dems for it's poor conditions.

beto literally did all of that, face-to-face dozens of times yet only did half a percent better with rural voters than the past senate election in texas. these people are unreachable right now.
Once you throw in "values" many rural voters will happily ignore whatever economic message people promote. The assumption that economics trumps everything works in theory but most of those people will happily sacrifice economic gains for any psychological gain they perceive from voting their values. In Ohio they drew up a welfare bill that exempt rural counties from work stipulations, they could have easily done one which applies uniformly to everyone in urban and rural counties but i bet they knew they could sell it better if they played to the lazy welfare moochers in urban areas rhetoric even if rural counties also use welfare. Look at the mental gymnastics performed when farmers get bailed out because soy prices collapse.
I think all these people need to spend a few hours just digesting but nothing right wing media like Breitbart and Fox News and then have it explained to them that these people aren't reachable and you need to energize your base. If you can't see the fanaticism and hate these people have for the left-wing or even "moderate republicans" you can't be saved. People forget that self-identified Democrats and Liberals outnumber conservatives and republicans. But they are constantly running away from that.
Being a moderate depresses your base and does nothing to draw the opposite. Gillium and Abrams showed the right way.
This woman and people like her can't accept that a lot of people on the right are so fanatical that there is a scary amount of them that think she should be dead for identifying as Democrat and I'm not even being hyperbolic.
I listened to right wing talk radio over the net during the period from the primary to the general. If Fox is bad then Michael Savage, Levin and others take it to a whole new level, in between hawking gold and other doomsday type stuff products they have no limits about what conspiracy they can spout. What leftists think are moderate or even centrist democrats are painted as leftist abortion on demand atheist gun grabber liberals and it does not matter if it is Sanders or Clinton/Obama. There are people who think they can be reached because they assume they are low information voters who just need to be educated but it will take a lot to break through the right wing media complex
