Its always intriguing to me to learn the back story of some of the greatest Hip-Hop albums and what the artists was going thru while crafting the masterpiece....

This video right here sparked this topic cause of Premo mentioning how GURU was going thru alotta legal troubles and 'Moment Of Truth' ended up being their first Gold album :whew:

Also to go along with 'Moment Of Truth' I would add Ghostface's 'Ironman', I feel this is Ghost's best album (IMO) and it was wild to me to hear how he really wasn't feeling it (see vid) and how he was going thru so much physically. It gave me a better appreciation for this greatness. :wow:

His group's album got shelved due to the cover, they get dropped from the label, and his brother dies in a car crash. Got locked and practically homeless for a time but still managed to give us a classic on his first solo outing.

And now he's back to where his brother went :to:

The way a nikka going might go out like Sam Cooke
Or locked up calling home for money on my books
'Cause if this shyt don't work, nikka, I failed at life
Turning to these drugs, now these drugs turned my life
And it's the downward spiral, got me suicidal
But too scared to do it so these pills will be the rifle
Surpassing all my idols, took the wrong turn
But can't go back now so let that blunt burn
'Cause now it's my turn if I fukk it all up
Took a while to get here now I depend on these drugs

Speaking of the MF legacy you could add Grimm to it, but I don't think he has a classic album tho :jbhmm:

I know with him being shot up and paralyzed and losing his brother, he's dealt with ALOT of tragedy. :to:

I know Scars & Memories gets me in my feels sometimes

American Hunger is great and the first legit triple disc in hiphop but I can't give it the classic label.

Still...60 songs and at least 45-50 of them are good :whew:

I would add in Supreme Clientele. Wasn't Ghost suffering legal troubles that pushed his album back for a year or two? :jbhmm:

The Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah said the four months he spent in a New York state prison last year were a blessing in disguise. While the sentence for attempted robbery delayed the 29-year-old rapper's second album, Supreme Clientele, it also gave him a second chance to refine the disc, he said.

I’m pretty sure it’s The Downfall or Iblys album that Grimm recorded while on some kind of 24hr work release from prison/jail. Haven’t read his comic for years now, I lost it :mjcry:

Ft. Stewart, Ga

His mother dying of cancer. The battle with Hov. Dealing with his child’s mother’s betrayal. Nas came out swinging but still somber on this album. Songs like Dance and Heaven are some of his most heartfelt and poignant writing.

Dealing with his father’s death as well as the seemingly endless string of black men and women being lynched by law enforcement had Common rapping with a passion and ferocity not heard since his Resurrection days.

The death of J.Dilla looms heavy over this album thematically and conceptually

my personal favorite album, made me realize hip hop is an incredible artform and never thought of anybody else as the greatest MC of all times
