If anything, what he did puts himself and CNN in the line of fire of being caught up in a lawsuit by the victims depending on what they find. They have no other choice but to fire him for that reason.

He could certainly try, but what he did likely gives CNN grounds to fire him with cause and not pay whatever left on his contract that they owe him. If he does get paid, then it will to keep him quiet and not speak about his time at CNN.
