A serious situation continues to unravel at the Coast Guard Station in Grand Haven.
The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety initially was investigating an incident as a potential act of domestic terrorism.
According to the department, a male suspect crashed his truck through the station gate around 6:00 Sunday morning, then broke in and assaulted Coast Guard personnel. He was subdued and arrested. He threatened to have explosives in his truck and the station was evacuated.
The Coast Guard reports that the Ottawa County Dispatch contacted the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, saying that they had received a call about 6 a.m. from an unknown man claiming he had a bomb in his truck and was going to blow up Station Grand Haven.
All Coast Guard personnel are safe. All road closures and shelter-in-place alerts around the area have been lifted.
Grand Haven Public Safety reported that as of about 12:30 p.m., no explosive devices were found and the Coast Guard Station has been deemed safe. This includes the suspect's truck. There has been no evidence that this was an act of terrorism.
The suspect is a 34-year-old Michigan man. His motives and intent are still unclear. The Oceana County Sheriff reports that they were called to a fire at about 4 a.m. on 34th Avenue in Golden Township. The scene was badly damaged and the last known occupant at that scene is the suspect being held in Grand Haven for the incident at the Coast Guard Station.
The Michigan State Police and the FBI Grand Rapids office are assisting in the investigation.
