It depends where you are from. I grew up in the country and everyone had guns. Hell in highschool my best friend kept my shotgun in his car and would come pick me up after football practice so we could walk some fields dove hunting after practice. It was not uncommon to see farm kids with trucks have a gun rack with shotguns of rifles on them at school(90s). Many folks black and white are avid hunters. I still like to go to the range and shoot, but I haven't hunted in many years. I have no desire to clean birds after I am done. Now, my buddies and I enjoy shooting different weapons, especially when we get something new.
Then you got these CACs who were to scared, drugged out, or out of shape to join the military that want to live out their murder fantasies and think just because they get the gear and weapons with all the fancy attachments that they are the second coming of Rambo. Morbidly obese cacs in tight cammo and plate carries with their belly sticking out from the bottom thinking they can go toe to toe with any soldier because they use these competition shooting grips that SOF has adoted. They think they all would have been SFOD-D operators if they joined but they never did because they are too good. Basically they are cosplaying their fantasies. Most of them would fold under the pressure of combat. They are the reason I hate going to certain gun stores and ranges. So many mentally deranged people including owners at guns stores and ranges. My boys and I used to go to outdoor ranges in Cali and those cacs used to hate us. Some of my boys were NCIS guys and had some weapons that were illegal in Cali. The looks we got were priceless.
If you enjoy shooting then the bug will grow. I first got a Taurus .45. It was fun and the GF and I would shoot regularly. She went from being scared to even touch it to enjoy shooting and wanting to learn how to shoot better. Then I picked up Springfield 9mm because the Taurus was expensive to shoot and wanted something with cheaper ammo. When I moved to Cali I picked up a high point carbine because it was incredibly cheap (In more ways that one) and my boy had tons of .40 SW ammo so I could shoot it for free. Then I picked up a home defense shotgun cause reasons......Moved to Hawaii and picked up an AR-10 for boar hunting (still haven't gone) and because I was free of Cali's dumb restrictions on AR rifles. I mainly got the AR cause I am so familar with how to operate it properly, I still have the muscle memory. Then I went and got my concealed carry permit and picked up a Glock 29 SF. I also use it when we go fishing in Alaska incase we come across any unfriendly wildlife and its easy to chest carry if I am fishing plus has the stopping power to make a bear think twice. I have zero camo and zero body armor. Why do I need it? I have some 5/11 pants and boots mainly when we are hiking to fishing spots when we go to Alaska. I have a tactical style chest rig but again more for convienence. My boys and I are all vets and none of us wear military style gear.
Side note, no one has the power to invade the US. Not China Not Russia. They do not have the strategic capability to project force halfway around to world and to sustain it. Russia can't even sustain their own troops away from rail heads in Ukraine. Wars are won by logistics and we are the only country with the logistic capability to project force effectively for long periods of time.
