So I noticed that we’ve got a lot of people either into IT or getting into IT but there aren’t any study groups to help make the studying easier/collectively motivate one another.

From my experience, there’s few things as lonely as the path to getting into IT. And the yield I work in currently doesn’t expose me to enough tech folks to where I can naturally study even when I’m not studying.

With all that said, for once I’d like for thecoli to be a useful tool instead of a convenient distraction. If anyone else is interested then put down what it is you’re currently working on and what resources you’ve found so far for studying. From there, other folks that are studying something similar or already work in that field can drop resources and give game on what they’ve picked up.

As far as what I’m looking for goes, I want to get into cyber security but admittedly I’m a bit turned off (pause) by the whole CompTIA process and rather than have a very lord over me I want to learn some of the programs that I’d be using in my day to day work.

I originally wanted to be an ethical hacker but decided that security analyst/consultation is much more my speed since it allows me more time for my real endeavors while paying me more than enough to not have to worried about mundane shyt like bills and potential financial emergencies.

As of right now I’m self teaching myself Qualys and using ChatGPT to write out study notes. Next I’ll be working on Splunk in the same way. To anyone interested, both Qualys and Splunk have free cert programs with How To videos and labs so if you want to go the consultation route there are two programs you can familiarize yourself with now to bolster the resume and get a gig without dealing with CompTIA’s fukk shyt.

Eventually ima do the Google Sec cert but in the immediate moment I just need a gig in the game to get some much needed money and experience.

Software engineer currently studying networking and cybersecurity. I'm down to study with the brehs.

If you want to learn programming, The Odin Project is in my opinion the best free resource for learning.

For networking, I'm reading the Network+ book. For security, I'm doing a lot of TryHackMe

How has Software engineering been for you? Is the pay good/are jobs available? Pros? Cons? How much or rigorous was that vs what you’re pursuing now?

Just went through the VMDR course on Qualys. I’ve been doing it over the span of the entire month so some of the info got fuzzy on me. Still, 47% out of 70% passing grade isn’t bad for my having not been fully consistent.

There’s unlimited retries but it doesn’t show you what you got wrong so I’ll need to go over my notes more thoroughly and maybe even write down the questions that I don’t know the answer to right away. For those of y’all that had trouble passing exams the first go round, what were some things y’all did to bounce back?

Yeah don’t 601 expire soon? That’s a lot of what made me pivot in the direction I’m in now. How’s the studying going? You retaining the info?

Yea it expires soon but I’ll have until November to purchase the voucher and that will be valid until July of next year I suppose.

I’m not retaining as much as I’d like but repetition is key for me

I never heard of Qualys I’ll look it up :ehh:

I'm getting ready to knock out the CISSP soon (going to try to get it in a month) so I would be down to join you guys. Obviously I would be studying something more advice but maybe I can provide some ideas on how I approach studying for a cert and a little extra motivation. My plan right now is as follows:
  • Books
    • CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide
    • Eleventh Hour CISSP: Study Guide
  • Videos
    • Thor Pedersen's CISSP Course
    • Pete Zerger's CISSP Exam Cram
  • Practice Tests
    • Boson CISSP Exam Prep
    • LearnZap CISSP Exam Prep
Not saying I will need all these materials (I already have at least one of each category) but may reference them and others if I feel what I already have isn't enough. The plan will be to study 2 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. ! hour spent reading and 1 hour spent watching videos. I'm choosing to only do 5-6 days a week to give my brain a day off and to have a day to organize/review the notes I took that week. I plan to start this weekend so if you need a little extra push/motivation let me know but be warned I can be pretty intense when it comes to things like this. Either way, good luck in your journey :salute:

I used his channel for The Security+.

I also recommend MeasureUp exams & Pocket Pro( Mobile app ) for exams.

Although it's a Microsoft cert. The Microsoft Learn - SC-900 helps with the Security+.

Honestly the Security+ is the Network+ on steriods..lol
