Lil B is funnier than Redman, and I fukk with Redman heavy.
Humor is definitely subjective. And I respect that you're not into trolling. I am. I get it. Trolling isn't for everyone.
With that said, I think hip hop has needed a good trolling because the genre has become WAY too generic and stale. If you're a "lyricist", all you care about is 'bars' and you take your music way too seriously, but not serious enough to actually make it good. If you're 'having fun', all you're doing is mindless turning-up without offering anything memorable. All facets of this modern hip hop shyt are super predictable, super comfortable and superYou need a troll to come in and shake things up. And I would argue that all great artists have trolls in them but that's another discussion.
You're not required to agree with me on this but Redman never called himself a bytch, fukked with hip hop's perceptions on masculinity and sexuality, 'cooked', laid curses on people, and spat the most random absurdities I've ever heard in hip hop. The "is he gay" thing (and other issues with hyper-masculinity) is very important because it's the one thing popular 90s rappers NEVER discussed (except for maybe Kool Keith). That is actually new territory for rap, and Lil B covered it in his own trollish ways. I respect the hell out of that.
Redman definitely made better music than Lil B no question, but Lil B is funnier. Again, you can't really compare Lil B to other rappers because he's more of a Youtube comedian than anything. His music doesn't really stand on its own - it comes with a fascinating package.
I still think his influence on rap is needed (it obviously birthed Rocky among others). Lil B is irreverent, creative and gives no fukks. That's the spirit of hip hop. Once that comes back to most acts, you'll see hip hop change overnight.
