Edit: I'm pretty sure his brother would have wanted him to give her some of the money for his children, so yes, he is an a$$hole.

Edit 2: His brother also probably never thought to change it because 1. he didn't expect to die, and 2. he didn't think his brother would do something like this.

The widow didn't even ask for the full sum of money and just a portion larger than 50k. Since the guy said he got 150k from life insurance and he said the 401k is much more substantial I can guess he's getting 350-500k in total if not more. This man says he did it so he can start a family of his own with his wife. Sounds like to me he didn't like his brother in the first place and his death was nothing more than a come up for him.
