Man I was so happy my school had a rental program. The only thing that sucked was when you had a course where there was no rental or all the rental copies have been leased. Our library was generally in on the scam so they never had the current edition on the shelves. Like if you were in Econ 101 and the textbook copy for the class was the 15th edition the library would have either the 12-14th on the shelf. Which for material purposes could get you by with the notes and shyt. But, you still needed a copy of the actual book to if the professor assigned the questions at the end of the section/chapter.
I also remember one year had to buy something brand new. Ended up dropping the class. This book was still in the cellophane with the school bookstore logo on it. When I tried to sell it back at the end of the semester them jokers tried to offer me $5 bucks on something that had an $80 price tag.
