I just watched the through the wire video & they showed that same session & the caption said his mouth was wired shut

Okay, so there's a lot of confusion around that. The version of Through the Wire that most people bump on the regular is NOT the version that he actually recorded with his jaw shut.

This is the actual version with his jaw shut. The version that made it to a music video and onto the album was a re-recorded version after his jaw was better. He just tried to re-create the sound of the original by holding his teeth close together, but you can tell a difference.

That was his whole thing. He rapped verses, hell, entire songs, for everyone he ran into. shyt even if they weren't trying to sign him he would rap in front of everyone.
