Can my current job find out if I work with a competitor while working for them? I have a job offer with a direct competitor but I want to do both because it fits my current schedule perfectly and is literally five minutes away from my current job. Can they find out and fire me? How likely is it that they would even check?
What do you do?
You have to read the fine print with your current employer. There might be an issue with you working for a competitor, especially if it the competitor can gain an unfair advantage.
If it is IT, then there might be a no-compete clause and you need permission to work another job, even if it's delivering pizza for Domino's. If your current employer is HP, they don't want you working a part-time job at IBM and vice versa.
If you are a cashier at McDonalds and want to work at Burger King, then go for it.
Otherwise, if your manager finds out, you may get terminated immediately .
