I love Louisiana.

Current Situation:
My life is great outside of work. Love seeing my family every weekend and I have a great great woman that would probably move with me after a while, I know she would hate DC tho. And Louisiana is the best State in the Fall and Winter with all of the festivals, parades and trailrides. So I'm know I'm going to be home I've lived in DC from 2004-2014, so I know my way around and a lot of people. I already have a place to stay with and my current lease ends in a few weeks. So it would be an easy move for most part. And staying with my friend for 500-600$ a month would allow me to save so much. IT jobs in Louisiana are hard to come by reason they can lowball you on the pay. I'm not currently using my Top Secret Clearance, which will go inactive soon. I'm currently in a Tier 2 Midlevel Sys Admin position and I don't really see a path to a better position or more money here anytime soon. This new job is a Senior level position. My current job sucks too, I work 7pm to 7am, Sun night, mon night, tues night and every other Wednesday. So I have a 3 or 4 day weekend, every weekend, but this job sucks. We bust our azz. A lot of conference calls, paperwork, working remotely, coordinating. I've never had to do so much on a job for this little bit of money. I make enough to live comfortable, but I'm not really saving much and I don't shop or eat out much. Another issue is, I don't ever think I can feel comfortable in a IT job in Louisiana unless it's a Gov't position, which I've applied for.

My plan:
It move back for 6 months to a year to keep my Top Secret clearance active, save and keep my Security+ CE cert valid, bcuz in my current job I have to motivation to do anything IT when I off. After 6 months I plan to start looking for a job back in Louisiana, unless my girl moves up and we're both doing well our careers. Eventually I feel like we're going to have to live in Dallas or Houston to live a very comfortable life, but a few spot are on the come up in Louisiana. My girl has a business degree and is a few credits away from her accounting degree, so I feel we could live anywhere. Another issue, I'm 30+. I want to settle down and start a family. My girl is down, but we're kind of new, but our families have been connected before we were born. Her dad and my dad were like brothers. Our moms use to hangout too. I feel she would stay loyal, but I don't want to put too much strain on our relationship so early. That's why I want her to move up in the new year or I'm moving back to Louisiana.

The Job:
Pay about 8k short of Double what I'm currently making
Normal 8-4pm hours
3 or 4 weeks of vacation, To whole benefits package
They want me to start in 2 weeks.

What would you guys think?

How secure is your job though ?

Do you think they could let you off and you would be fine u/e for while ???

How easy do you think your situation could change???

Honestly would not make a decision of the current but more so how you could see it panning out

Things could definitely change at my current job, when I first started I was told I would be working EVERY THUR, FRI and SAT night and every other Wednesday night. Thank God someone quit while I was in training and I was able to grab their days and hours.

Ive been asked to switch to weekends or another spot in the bldg working weekends. We're short on people and someone seems to leave every month, I'm one of the more knowledgeable workers so I know I'd be forced to work/lead a shift, most likely a weekend shift.

Keep in mind the Cost of Living in DC. Double your salary = You will be making the same you make now in DC.
Cost of living: How far will my salary go in another city? - CNNMoney

Go to that site and enter your current salary and see what it says when u pick DC as the city you want to move to. If the Salary they say in DC is less that your offer then you will be hustling backwards.

Yeah bro DC for sure. Even if that job don't work out your potential network there could land in a similar/better situation. I understand your situation now is great but personally I would go ahead and take that job

Just isn't a lot of decent paying IT jobs here like I'm accustomed to in DC. Not only that, I'm new to the area so I don't have the network or know many people in IT here to go to if I was to lose my job. I'm kind of scared to build a life around this job. I feel like if I was to lose this job it would take a while (months to find another decent paying job in this area). Or I'd have to move to Texas.

Kind of feel like I'm jumping ship before it sinks.

You could move to the outskirts of DC. Still relatively cheap out here where I am.

Or you could move to Virginia or Maryland and live a relatively quiet suburban life without too painful a commute if you take Metro. Might be a bit more painful if you drive but some people enjoy that time.

Great point :jbhmm:
Idk bruh

DC Is the 3rd most expensive are in America, and Louisiana is one of the cheapest so dude might really need 3 to 4x his current salary to even live comfortable in DC (assume he makes less than 70k). He probably cant afford to actually live in DC more than likely so he will need to factor in commute and more expensive food, etc etc into that. Makes no sense to Relocate and live tight unless he plans to do this short term and bounce to another job and even then he would be better off staying in Louisiana and just applying to other cities and demanding what he wants. IMO he would be better off going to Austin TX which is much cheaper than DC and has a better Tech industry.

I live in ATL and I`d never go to DC, NYC, or SF unless I was being offered a 200k salary minimum.
