I don't see why they have college sports. Just build pro teams for youngsters starting at 15 like in Europe.
There was either a 30-30 or Outside the Lines investigation where they showed some kids who play college sports were actually graduating (with bullshyt degrees, of course) and still couldn't even read on a fifth grade level. There was a lady in there who said that those degrees and those admissions, even , are devaluing the diplomas/degrees at some of those universities.
I guess you could make that argument.
Personally it's just always been funny to me how these world-renowned Universities who are known for their academic researches and accomplishments workdwide are often only known for their athletic achievements within the United States. Like Stanford is a top 3 Medical School in the whole wide world but you mentioned Stanford University to anybody here and the first (and probably only) thing they think of our John Elway and Andrew Luck
The difference between US and other countries is that these sports (basketball and football) gained their popularity at a college level before there were big time professional leagues.
So the institution of college b-ball and football was too large by the time the professional leagues became popular. There is so much money and history that is tied to this, that it would be very difficult to transition to a different model.
So it becomes a sham of an education for some athletes, but the alternatives just don't seem viable. There just doesn't seem to be a fix here.

"Held back" is used for kids who don't perform well. Bagley forwent his Senior year to play b-ball.
