US Gov’t makes taxes as complicated, so they can take peoples money when they don’t file. My mom was an accountant. The tax code changes constantly and you have to take yearly classes to keep up. It’s the most kafkaesque bureaucracy this side of China. :francis:

The reality is most of these services provide free federal filing when you use their paid services and that will likely be the case due to the competitiveness of the market.

I dont recall any year where I had to pay for federal filing - - only state.

Shrug

That makes 2 of us... At least in WI they have a relatively easy to use fax form (PDF) for free.

But yea, I don't see anything wrong with the gov't creating their own FREE tax service, as long as it stayed FREE. Given the market right now, i can't see free federal taxes going away anytime soon, unless turbotax buys everybody up

That's because you're below the income threshhold. If the government offered a free filing service, it might be open to everyone. That's what they're scared of.

I make over 6 figures. The reason I don't is because whether it was Turbo tax in the past or h and r block in person they offer free filing for using their services.

You're wrong here.

I'm dead serious. All these companies have offered free federal for a decade. It is one of their major draws to get people to use their products over others.

But I'm not going to feign outrage over a law that maintains the status quo especially when it isn't stopping planned action to create a better system.

There was a time for this campaign and it was during the overhaul of the tax system. :francis:

I have my suspicions, but I doubt this will be an issue during the upcoming elections. :francis:

idk if it's just state taxes(I don't believe it is) but for low incomes NYers and college students there are free filing services all over the place.

Free filing for federal taxes is easy if you're low income.

State taxes depend on the state though. I don't think free online filing for state taxes exists in california. (If anyone knows of it help me out).

Just filed my taxes (yeah, I know I procrastinated) and it was free for Cali too. In previous years online filing had only been free for federal, but now it's both, so that's nice.
