A police officer has been fatally shot and a manhunt for three suspects is underway outside Chicago, authorities said today.
The deadly shooting is believed to have happened after the officer sent a radio message saying that he was chasing after three men, authorities said.
The Fox Lake police officer has not been publicly identified but Lake County Sheriff's Department Det. Chris Covelli confirmed to ABC News that the officer has died as a result of the shooting.
The incident started at 7.52 a.m. today when the officer said via radio that he was pursuing two white men and one black man, according to a Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman at an afternoon news conference.
Police lost communication with the officer after his radio message, and a backup officer found him injured, police said.
