LONDON — Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States is an opportunity to reset relations with Russia and “demilitarize” the frontier with Europe, U.K. Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn said Sunday.

Corbyn, a strong critic of the NATO, called for channels to be re-opened with Vladimir Putin and for “relations to be improved” with Moscow.

The Labour leader’s remarks risk sparking fresh concern among his MPs who reacted angrily to his response to Trump’s victory last week. Corbyn said he understood why American voters had rebelled against the establishment and suggested it was part of a wider global movement against globalization and free trade.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show Sunday, Corbyn said the U.S. election result exposed the “anger of left behind America.”

He also suggested the Labour party would not vote against the government triggering Article 50 that would kick off Britain’s separation talks from the EU. However, Corbyn insisted he would continue to demand free access to the European single market and the continuing protection of workers’ rights.

On Russia, the Labour leader said: “I have many, many criticisms of Putin — or the human rights abuses in Russia and of the militarization of society. However, I do think there has to be a process that we try to demilitarize the border between what are now the NATO states and Russia so we drive apart those forces and keep them further apart in order to bring about some kind of accommodation. We can’t descend into a new Cold War.”
Corbyn, a veteran socialist and pacifist, suggested that Trump’s election could improve relations with Russia.

He said: “Well, I’m not quite sure of Donald Trump’s personal economic relations with Russia but he clearly thinks he can have a good relationship with Putin on the basis that Putin is a strong leader. It’s not about strong leaders, it’s about strong movements towards coexistence and towards peace.

“We seem to be moving back to the language of the 1990s, when the Organization for Security and Cooperation should’ve been the pre-eminent grouping — maybe that grouping, alongside the Council of Europe, could be a forum which relations can be improved with Russia.

“But we do have to condemn the human rights abuses in Russia, we do have to condemn the many aspects of Russian foreign policy,” Corbyn said.

Jeremy Corbyn is always so honest with his opinions (something he'll need to stop if he wants to become PM) but I agree with him. I also do think that Putin may end up bullying Trump though so I guess we have to wait and see.
