Loosing my Espanish, by H.G. Carrillo

H.G. Carrillo lived most of his adult life as a Cuban-American novelist who fled Havana as a child – then his recent death from COVID-19 revealed his origin story was one of his greatest fictions.

The author, assistant professor at George Washington University and chairman of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation died from coronavirus April 20 in Washington, D.C., at the age of 59.

His initial obituary published Friday by the Washington Post included a detailed interview with his husband and claimed Carrillo “fled Fidel Castro’s island in 1967.”

The story caught the eye of Carrillo’s Michigan-based sister and niece, who reached out to the newspaper to set the record straight.

They said Carrillo, known as Hache to his friends, was actually born Herman Glenn Carroll in Detroit and had no Latino heritage.

According to the relatives, Carrillo formed the fictitious identity that defined his later years after teaching himself Spanish, becoming a writer and publishing his 2004 debut novel, “Loosing My Espanish.”

“My brother was very talented,” sister Susan Carroll told The Post. “He could see something, watch something, hear something, and do it.”

She described her sibling as “always eccentric” and said their mother had a hard time when he gained prominence as a writer and disowned his true backstory.

“She was really, really hurt by the whole facade, and I confronted him about it,” Carroll recalled. “Our mother was thinking: ‘What did we do wrong? Did he have such a horrible childhood?’ But he said nothing much back to me. He said he loved me and always would.”

Niece Jessica Webley said her uncle excelled at keeping his “family and social life separate.”

Carrillo’s husband Dennis vanEngelsdorp, a professor of entomology at the University of Maryland, told The Post his spouse of the last five years “was always a hard guy to know.”

Learning the truth about his husband’s early life from Carroll, whom he barely knows, was hard to process, but he’s since come to accept and appreciate it.

“At first, I was just so downcast,” he told The Post over the weekend. “I’ve only met his family by text. I never understood why he would never introduce me. Now I do.”

He said his husband found his calling in literary fiction, and his imagination was what made him special.

“I’ve been on a long walk this morning, and I’ve come to peace with this," he told The Post in their updated obituary.

"I think that in any other century, there were storytellers, like jesters, and in African culture, and in First Nations cultures, and when they told stories, people never expected the truth to be the reality, you know? There was another truth there. And I think that speaks to Hache,” he said.

Dude was troubled to deny his family like that. Rest in Peace.

Now, that we got that out of the way, the FIRST thing I thought about after reading this story was

Yeah, I found it really sad. His parents were teachers -- and truth be told - Detriot is beauiful city - with wonderful Black history.

It made me sad he felt ashamed (I am assuming he was ashamed) of his ethnicity and lineage.

Honestly, this only made me want to advocate even more for Black/ADOS history in our public school system - as well as making sure we are highlighting our rich culture and accomplishments.

I was discussing this no more than just a minute ago. But some ADOS people really have a issue of self hate not cause of their blackness but who they are as ADOS people

its why you got nikkas out here clinging to nonados groups(jamaicans, nigerians, etc), cling to Egypt, etc. nikkas legit hold others above their own(ADOS). its why you can be on this site and talk about ADOS nikkas like a MF. But say one thing about other groups and well:whistle:

I've noticed that too. Hopefully, one day they will get you can love, respect and enjoy all different black ethnicities -- and still be proud of, take up for and respect your own ethnicity.

I know people hate that I don't allow disrespect for ADOS. They get mad and push back when I speak out about it. But who cares.

nikkas cling to other groups to feel better about being black, due to them thinking they are more "blacker" than us, or whatever reason.

nikkas got issues with themselves.
look at acts like Tariq, he has been belittling certain parts of ADOS for years. And nikkas loved him on here hence why "bedwench" is popular here
he starts talkin about nonados people and what they do - he now the most hated person on here.

nikkas here on the coli generalize and insult ADOS people like crazy. There have been thread generalizing ADOS BM/BW, ADOS blacks in Interracial, Blacks in the south, west, etc. Blacks that are mixxed, blacks that are brown/light/dark etc. And that has been cool

nikkas start talking about Non ados people and the shady stuff they do then it becomes "woah you crossing the line there:whoa: thats divisve" like nikka, so all that shyttalking on certain segments of ADOS people aint divisive?:aicmon:

nikkas love to cherrypick on what can be addressed on here. And its not just the coli its ADOS in general. nikkas are more protective of Nonados than their own

and you know Nonados nikkas gonna chirp in and think they can give their two cents of generalizing ADOS people cause nikkas have invited them in.
But when we address nonados people. Nonados and ADOS nikkas come to the rescue for them

Above the fray.
@Cadillac

How does a news story about a grown man from Detroit willingly claiming another ethnicity factor into what you wrote?

I have to read more into his life, but it seemed like he was an untalented writer. There are so many great writers from the AA literary tradition who have written about a variety of topics. He wasn't good enough to break through that competition, so he carved out a less crowded lane.
Not AfroPuerto Rican, not AfroDominican, but AfroCuban.

For him to carry it as far as to deny his family in real life. points to him being deeply troubled. Think it extends past ethnicity too, as his "husband" looks like Thor's little brother or an Aryan general.Got the whitest partner he could find.
dennis.jpg

Passing is nothing new. There are Islander and African kids/teens who try to pass as AAs, but not to the extent of adopting a fake identity for life. And if they did, people from their cultures wouldn't try to blame AAs for what a troubled individual did.

Oh, and Tariq is a clown and you know full well that he is. The entire "bu bu bu but it was okay when he was dissing AAs, but now that he switched" is a smokescreen that his fans use to not have to own up that he is documented to be a liar, promoting misleading info, and inconsistent. Many of us have been calling him out for lies, misleading info, and being inconsistent for years. His fans can't respond to him being exposed for LYING all the time, so the smokescreens/juelzes come out.

I hope I didn't start no ish in this thread -- it was not my intention.

Do you think that's why he did it? To carve out a spot? I hope.

Sadly, the first thing I thought of was shame of being Black/ADOS. As his sister stated he basically stopped connecting with them.
