Its interesting to me because almost all popular popular music over the last 10 years has been based on advanced digital music technology. At this point I'd be really surprised if music with live instruments ever makes a comeback in the mainstream. Every musical movement from Trap to Vaporwave has been computer based recently. Live based acts really have to innovate to make waves and its harder than ever in the light of fast and cheaply produced soundcloud records.
I feel like Neo Soul is kind of still around, its a big inspiration for people like Drake and Kendrick who are the biggest artists around. I mean TPAB is basically a Neo soul album. And then you have artists like SZA, Solange, Janelle Monae and others. I think as a movement it just got overtaken by other stuff.
