Manhattan’s new liberal district attorney sent guidance to his staff this week saying he does not intend to prosecute several offenses, suggesting that “decriminalization” will help “make us safer,” according to reports

Alvin Bragg, who was sworn in as Manhattan district attorney on January 1, sent a memo to his office on Monday calling for the “decriminalization/non prosecution” of crimes including marijuana possession, turnstile jumping, trespassing, resisting arrest, interfering with an arrest and prostitution

The guidance calls for downgrading felony charges in cases including armed robberies and drug dealing.

The memo says the office will “not seek carceral sentence other than for homicide” or “class B violent felony in which a deadly weapon causes serious injury, domestic violence felonies” with few exceptions

How George Soros funded progressive DAs behind US crime surge

Hungarian-born philanthropist Soros and his Open Society group of non-profits have mainly doled out cash to political action campaigns controlled by attorney and criminal justice reform activist Whitney Tymas, 60. She is the treasurer of the Justice and Safety PAC as well as 20 other similarly named groups at both the state and federal levels, according to public filings.

The goal of the myriad PACs is focused on electing progressives to end tough policing and mass incarceration, according to Tymas. “If we are to reach a place of true progress, it will take the sustained efforts of local elected prosecutors across the country to rectify and reimagine their role in the criminal legal system — not just as gatekeepers, but as active catalysts for change,” wrote Tymas in an opinion article last year.

Her efforts coupled with Soros’ largesse have played an outsize role in some of the most controversial district attorney campaigns in the US, including George Gascon in Los Angeles as well as Larry Krasner in Philadelphia and Kim Foxx in Chicago, among others. Soros also donated $1 million to Alvin Bragg’s successful DA campaign in Manhattan, funneling the cash through the Color of Change political action committee, according to public filings.

Critics say the policies of Soros-funded DAs, which have included abolishing bail and, in the case of Chicago, placing hundreds of violent criminals on electronic tracking systems, have led to a spike in crime throughout the country. According to the FBI’s annual Uniform Crime Report released in September, the country saw a 30 percent increase in homicides in 2020 — the largest single-year spike since they began recording crime statistics 60 years ago. The report also saw a 24 percent decrease in arrests across the country.

This isn't that crazy, as long as you invest in career options for would be criminals. Folks forget, but there were alot of well known Jewish; Italian, and Irish criminals pre-WWII era.

Ffs, cacs in Chicago were shooting it out in the streets. That started to slow down once everyday "ethnic" cacs became "white", and could access those good police jobs; fire fighter jobs, New Deal programs, and VA loans.

Don’t see a problem with this. You shouldn’t go to jail for selling drugs.

:francis:

Are you getting the point that I'm making? It's basically them allowing crime to happen through "reforms". They're like if you don't want us to do our overpolicing and police brutality, we aren't going to serve and protect you at all. We just gonna let the criminals run wild where you basically beg us to make another crime bill through Jim crow Joe. And it's gonna come at the expense of black bodies.

A National Review article *and* some George Soros conspiracy bullshyt from the NYPost. :mjlol:

Didn't you just made a thread pretending to care about bad prosecutors/prosecution?

Bragg said the office will stop prosecuting people for theft of services, trespassing (unless it accompanies a stalking charge), aggravated unlicensed operation, routine traffic violations not accompanied by felony charges, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and prostitution.

The memo, released Tuesday, is among Bragg’s first acts as district attorney after running on a progressive platform and promising to use his powers to reduce the number of people behind bars in the city and state. The policies align with pledges Bragg made on the campaign trail and emerge from the theory espoused by progressive prosecutors across the country — undergirded by a growing body of research — that reducing low-level prosecutions may lead to less crime, not more.

“These policy changes not only will, in and of themselves, make us safer; they also will free up prosecutorial resources to focus on violent crime,” Bragg wrote in the memo. “While my commitment to making incarceration a matter of last resort is immutable, the path to get there … will be informed by our discussions … and our work together in the weeks and months ahead.”

In addition to the list of charges the DA won’t prosecute, Bragg said his office would only seek pre-trial detention in a small handful of cases: murder or homicide, certain violent felony offenses, sex offenses, domestic violence felonies or public corruption cases. He said his Assistant District Attorneys would seek a maximum of 20 years in prison for any crime and would never ask for life without parole.
