Cuba Gooding Jr. Says It's 'Important' To Use The Word 'N****r' On TV

Tuesday night’s episode of "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson" reignited the ongoing debate about the use of the word "******" on television.

The show’s sixth episode reenacted a scene from the actual murder trial, which included a courtroom cross-examination between Simpson’s former defense lawyer F. Lee Bailey (played by Nathan Lane) and former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman (played by Steven Pasquale). In the scene, and throughout the taped exchange,Bailey uses the racial slur six times in reference to Simpson -- and goes on to question Furhman on whether or not he has used the term at any time during the previous decade.

Reactions to the use of the controversial word on the show immediately spread on social media Tuesday night. However, despite the mixed responses, the show’s star Cuba Gooding Jr., who plays Simpson, says it’s “important” for actors to use the term on television.

"Absolutely I think it's important," Gooding told People.com. "Our job as artists is to reflect the ills of society sometimes and to find a truth in that, and I think you can't start the healing process until you recognize the truth and all of its ugly warts and all."

Gooding isn't the only distinguished black star to weigh in on the issue. Last year, actor Terrence Howard also shared his thoughts on the censorship of the term in regards to his hit show, "Empire."

“Why is TV showing something different from the reality of the world,” Howard previously told Entertainment Weekly. “Why is there a thing called censorship that stops people from hearing everyday talk? We use 'nikka' every day. It’s become part of a conversation -- why aren’t we using it in the show?”

He took one str8 outta the new black bible with this one. I hate when ppl talk about this "healing" process America has to go thru, as if the oppresion that went on for hundreds of yrs was mutual and both black ppl and white need to sit down together and say sorry to each other. Nah, black ppl were the one that were persecuted and any talk about healing is just a way to euphamize the past and current reality. Aint no healing that needs to happen what needs to happen is correction and reparations.

I actually agree with him on this one especially on a TV show about the OJ Simpson trial. You just can't half step it.

No its not important for "ACTORS" to use the word on national television, so cacs can feel validated to start using it in their every day encounters with us, this is a fail safe c00n moment, where as soon as cacs get wind that its ok to use this on television, you'll see it in their movies with them saying it as if its become a norm....can't believe this idiot even mentioned this shyt....

He's a c00n always has been and always will be......nothing he said makes sense.....he's pandering to cacs......I mean his kids are half breeds and he married a white bytch....she was probably calling him nikka everyday and he smiled about it........

I agree with him as it pertains to the show's depiction of what happened. The Mark Fuhrman aspect of that trial was significant. So significant that Fuhrman carved out a nice career for himself because of the notoriety. That said, to not use the word or censor it in that context is silly to me. To censor it would be like cutting out the nude scenes portraying Holocaust victims in Schindler's List for fear of offending anorexics.

By the way, off topic, never noticed till now, but Fuhrman's name has Fuhr in it. :jbhmm: As in The Fuhrer. The irony.
