Cuomo Denounces Anti-Semitic Attacks During Trip To Israel
Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited Israel on Sunday and launched a New York-Israel economic development commission to encourage Israeli investment here and to cement ties between the two governments’ law enforcement agencies.
Cuomo announced the new 22-member panel amid a spike in anti-Semitism in the Big Apple and around the country.
“New York and Israel have always shared a deep cultural, social and economic bond,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the impacts of this partnership resonate across the state and the globe for years to come.”
The commission’s panelists include Anti-Defamation League big Abe Foxman, American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten and state Health Commissioner Howard Zucker.
The commission plans to organize a business summit to promote investment, roadshows for Israeli businesses to explore the state and industry-specific roundtables to “advance research.”
The commission also aims to “help New York learn from one of the world’s leaders in counter-terrorism operations,” according to a governor’s office press statement. Exactly what that will involve is unclear, and a spokesman for the governor did not immediately respond to questions about it.
Cuomo’s one-day trip included visits at the Western Wall and Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial. Citywide, anti-Semitic incidents have jumped 94 percent this year, according to data the NYPD released Wednesday — with 35 incidents reported so far this year, compared to 18 in the first two months of 2016.
Cuomo also announced a new partnership between the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the New York Genome Center to kickstart biomedical research and create jobs in the life sciences field.
