DMX was on par and almost surpassed 2Pac in 99/00 if he could've just stayed clean.:wow:

X had every tool in his arsenal to take Hip-Hop where an Eminem or 50 Cent eventually would've taken it but let his demons get the best of him.:picard:

Addiction is no joke. :mjcry:

How he can shake his habit this time because he's almost 50. With the abuse he's put his body through unfortunately drug abusers don't live well past 60 and at his rate he's not gonna make it past 2020.:francis:

DMX is the most underrated storyteller in hip hop history, and the Damien series is legendary. Nothing will top the first one tho... Dark poetry and storytelling at its finest.

said this in the IDAHIH 20yr thread but X scared nikkas in the studio recording this record. They thought he was possessed doing the damien voice

I hate this narrative... X came out the gate smoking crack..he my favorite rapper of all time but it is what it is... X admits to smoking .crack since age 14... So if he was clean from the jump we would've probably had a completely different artist if at all... But of course I hope he stays clean the rest of his life

What, it's the truth. From X's own autobiography and separately years later from his first wife that looked like IT the Clown both said that before his grandmother's death in 1994 he kicked the habit to please her and when she died later that year because he was clean he focused on his career and that's when the labels came calling. X was clean from 1994-00 until he relapsed. In his own book he almost signed to Death Row in 1995 with The L.O.X who were both unsigned artists which is why they are both on Puff's Bad Boy Mixtape series in 95/96, Suge wanted to steal Puff's artists. X was at his peak when he was clean and he hasn't recovered since relapsing then.

I dont think X was ever really focused on his career he wrote alot of IDAHIH in jail. Doubt he was clean for that long. He was still robbing nikkas up until he got signed... And he robbed nikkas to feed the habit.

He performed get at me dog with his jaw wired because he got jumped over a robbery they thought he did but for once he said it Wasnt him. But my memory may be off. Haven't .Read x book in like 14yrs

Once I believe that's what I was referring to.. He rapped get at me dog to get signed. The way they tell the story is pretty crazy though. Irv gotti convinced Lyor cohen to come with him to the studio in Yonkers to hear DMX rap... X had just gotten his jaw wired and got the call the def jam exec was coming to hear him... X describes feeling the wires stretch and rip at his gums and tasted blood as he rapped get at me dog for Lyor and everyone else in the studio... nikka really went all out... Imagine the initial pain of having your jaw wired period. Then yelling and rapping. Knowing that you could possibly fukk up your whole shyt up and not even get the deal.

Side note I always liked the line on look thru my eyes
"and cats that used tonsay x is the best, know he still is"

To the world he was an unknown but he was rapping like he was trying to get a deal since 86 (which he was) the hunger and confidence was unmatched. The energy of that entire album is a once in a lifetime experience.
