A fitting end to the Dark Souls trilogy, that eventually overcomes the feeling of overfamiliarity with some daring new features and classic boss battles.

Gamekult - 9/10

Jimquisition PC - 9/10 PS4 - 8/10
Even individual areas lack the intricacies seen in the various shortcuts and labyrinthine pathways found in other chapters. There are a few moments of brilliance, that much can’t be denied, but the complex architecture that made my jaw drop in From’s other productions just isn’t there.

Destructoid - 8.5/10

Gamespot - 8/10
Dark Souls 3 is a harrowing trek through a dark and gorgeous world, and despite a few missteps, is well worth the challenge.

Polygon - 7/10
Dark Souls 3 lives up to the formula in some respects but falls short a little too often

cubed3 - 7/10
FromSoftware has once again created a game that you don't just play through, but experience as an engrossing odyssey… and, as expected from the series, it's not for everyone.

Not Scored

ACG - Buy (video review)
A solid wrap up to the series.

Rock Paper Shotgun - POSITIVE
But it also means extra loading screens whenever you want to take care of business (short loading screens, mind) and emphasises the fragmented nature of this world. There are wonderful places to explore in Dark Souls III and they’re all linked in imaginative and spectacular ways but those links are visual rather than physical. They are within the same continuous world and there is a logic to your progression through them, but the entire setting is not one wondrous physical labyrinth.

Seems like Bloodborne(THE PS4 EXCLUSIVE) is rated higher (92) :sas2:

It's always strange to me how the souls games don't get taken to task for how poorly they run at times.

Reading even on high end pcs the frame rate dips to the low teens in sections.

And sometimes hits single digits on console.

I thought I might hold off on this because I have UFC 2 and the Division distracting plus I grabbed Strider and Sword Art for backlog stashes when they were on the flash sale...but those reviews got me thinking I'll want to be part of the first run through this game where the whole gaming community is sharing discoveries. Bout to preorder to get that day one delivery.

Detail comes with a price, and it can be felt in the performance. On PC, III runs at a relatively consistent sixty frames-per-second, but there are certain locations that cause inevitable dips. You’ll be “thrilled” to learn that Dark Souls III has its own version of Blight Town – it’s poisonous, it’s full of nasty enemies, and it will absolutely tank the framerate.

On PS4, the experience is further hampered, with slowdown in multiple locations for a game that can only handle an fps of 30 at peak. The upside is that, at least in my experience, these dips in performance occur in strangely unpopulated areas, meaning you should have a solid framerate when it comes to combat. Make no mistake, however, that console versions are inescapably inferior.

I'm not a casual but I was coming in here to ask about Dark Souls. I've never played an entry. Do 1 and 2 still hold up? I'd like to knock out those two before hopping into this.

Put me onto elite gaming Mowg :lupe:
I say try out 2 on discount and if you don't like it in the first few hours just try 3 and if you like 2 then you'll like 1 and should cop 3. You won't finish both before next Tuesday so don't even try it lmao. May as well try 3 and if you don't like it why bother with the other 2
