During a recent documentary about Funk music, they ran a clip about how Black radio and dance clubs played his song Fame, because it was a great record. They blew it up before it became a hit on the charts. His first #1 hit in America.
Experimenting (pause), and playing and merging different genres and elements is consistent with who he was as an artist. So him seeing the Fame record being embraced by Black audiences, and then seeing MTV front on Black artists who also merged and blended genres (including rock) caused him to speak out.
