Steve McElvene, a University of Dayton basketball player who would have been a redshirt sophomore in the fall, died Thursday, the school announced.

The school said McElvene was in his hometown of New Haven, Ind., at the time of his death, but did not cite a cause.

Fyers coach Archie Miller said, “We are devastated at this news. Any death is a tragedy, but for someone so young who worked so hard to have his dreams within reach, it’s hard to put into words how painful this is. Our hearts and prayers go out to Steve’s family. My family, our team and our staff will have to pull together, not only in support of Steve’s family, but in support of each other at this terrible time.”

According to Glenn Marini, the sports director at the CBS affiliate in Fort Wayne, Ind., McElvene collapsed at his family’s home.

Can confirm Steve McElevene passed away this afternoon at his family's home after collapsing. Enlarged heart is believe to be the cause.

Damn I had him as a sleeper for future draft in my draft thread. He had some talent. R.I.P.
Dayton always got some drama with their players every summer. This is horrible and sad though

I Remember 3 summers ago I was in the hospital over night after going in because I felt dizzy earlier in the day and almost fainted. The Doctor's said that I might have an enlarged heart and that I had to stay overnight so they can monitor my heart and run further tests. I was horrified and so was my family. Come to find out I just had severe dehydration :whew: I had worked at our local ballpark that summer and would sometimes go entire shifts with just a couple bottles of water in 80 + degree weather...take care of ya bodies brehs
