Open Mike Eagle has admitted to not even listening to "a lot of Hip Hop" during the golden era and said as a kid, he was mostly into "other genres". So I wouldn't take too much of what he says seriously. He's always came across as a casual.

But honestly, Native broke up because of the JB's and De La's bitterness, and apparent jealousy of Tribe's success. Russell and Lyor came to Tribe and thought they could be bigger stars, so they signed them to Rush Management too. The issue started when The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders was blowing up. But De La wasn't. So on tour with De La, Tribe was closing and Rush didn't think De La could close because their albums weren't doing well.

Lyor sat them down and told them they had to get their sh*t together because Tribe was killing it on the road and with sales. Tip said JB's and De La got mad and stopped speaking to them.
