The tempo always gets ramped up in training camp when the pads go on, even if it is just shells.

That was the case Saturday afternoon at Tennessee Titans camp when receiver Michael Preston took offense to Michael Griffin slinging down receiver Nate Washington.

A melee involving about 20 or so players ensued, though there were no injuries.

Griffin took responsibility for instigating the fight and said he would also accept any and all fines that might come as a result.

“At the end of the day, it doesn't need to get to that. There was a trash can over that, people falling over with that, people trying to break it up. It doesn't need to get to that,” Griffin said. “There's probably going to be a fine handed out and I told Munch, even if he wants to fine Preston, I'll take that fine also. I threw the first punch, and there it is. It's settled right there.'

Preston as well said the matter is over.

“It was a little scuffle. It's part of football. It's going to happen from time to time out there, competing against each other at a high level. Neither one of wanted to back down. You move on from it and you just have to get better,” Preston said.

Coach Mike Munchak had the best quip of the day about the fight that involved mostly receivers and defensive backs.

“It was mainly a lot of little guys trying to look tough.”

For this camp, the Titans have instituted an odd new media rule, even for their open practices. Media is not allowed to shoot the final periods of practice, so there was no video or still photography available from the fight, until a fan shot surfaced on Twitter and then was promptly retweeted my every outlet covering the team in camp.

Length of practice: 2 hours

Gear: Helmet, shoulder pads

Weather: Sunny, 86 degrees

Best: Wide receiver Michael Preston made a couple of nice catches, once stretching out over the middle for a Jake Locker pass and once going up over cornerback Jason McCourty to catch a Locker pass in the end zone … Tight end Jack Doyle made one of the day’s best catches, going high for a Rusty Smith pass in the back of the end zone and coming down with it despite good coverage by safety Al Afalava … Cornerback Alterraun Verner continued his good play during camp, breaking up a Smith pass and nearly intercepting it.

Worst: Center Fernando Velasco left practice early with an apparent allergic reaction, meaning the Titans (already without Brian Schwenke) were down to two centers – Rob Turner and Chris Spencer … Tight end Brandon Barden couldn’t hold on to a catchable pass at the goal line … Locker had another good day overall, but missed an open Craig Stevens on a quick out route at the goal line.

Of note: Middle linebacker Colin McCarthy remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. He and rookie linebacker Zaviar Gooden (ankle) could miss a week … Running back Chris Johnson signed autographs for over an hour following practice … Safety Bernard Pollard heckled back-up kicker Maikon Bonani relentlessly during most of his attempts. Bonani missed two of his final four tries … Schwenke was working out outside during practice, throwing around some heavy exercise ropes as if they were jump ropes. … RB Chris Johnson signed autographs for more than an hour following practice.

Which wide receivers will make the 53-man roster for the Tennessee Titans? From June 3-4, Titan Sized evaluated the two frontrunner candidates: Nate Washington and Damian Williams. It’s time to start reviewing three players who really need a strong training camp if they’re going to win a roster spot.

Let’s take a look at the player who’s the biggest unknown commodity among this group: Michael Preston. At 6-5 and 206 pounds (ESPN), Preston has spent most of his first two seasons on the Titans’ practice squad. He did appear in the last four games of the 2012-13 NFL season. He had five receptions for 59 yards.

Who is Preston? Titan Sized assistant editor and lead columnist Josh Gunnels addressed those issues when he wrote this article on Dec. 12, 2012. Preston was praised for his hard work during practice. Here’s an interesting tidbit from that article:

John Glennon later reported that Mike Munchack and the coaching staff thought that Preston was a “good fit” for this game. He plays the same receiver position, “X”, as Kenny Britt, and that basically Preston would be another big target and be able to give Britt a break during the game.

Homeboy been beastin this camp tho :gladbron:

Yep, that's my blood cousin. Just got off the phone with his brother and I might be at the game on August 8th to show some support for him.

He's a good dude and really talented....especially as a 6'5 210+ WR running a 4.5 with hands.

Hopefully the Titans give him some more opportunities and he shows out in this 1st preseason game.

I gotta support the fam, so I'm gonna be watching the Titans as long as he's there
