Folks in Gary still call MJ the mayor to this day, soon as you get off I 90 on Broadway there is a big ass mural on the side of a building of the whole Jackson 5 right across from city hall. They actually grew up on Jackson St, named after President Andrew Jackson. It’s in one of the rougher hoods on the Westside of Gary, most of the stuff around it is bandos, but his house is kept up nice. It’s a ratchet ass HS right behind the house, kids walking back and forth thru the area all the time. But nothing goes down on that part of Jackson St., that block is like a shrine. White folks come thru all the time to take pics, don’t nobody mess with them. The Jackson family period is legendary, some of them still running around up there. Joe had a lot of siblings, and most of them moved up to the same area and they all had big family’s just like he did.
As messed up as the G looks, the degrees of separation between regular folks round the way and famous people is actually wild. Everybody kin to somebody. Outside the Jackson’s Gary did a decent job for a town it’s size of putting out B and C list Black celebrities in the 60s-80’s. Lots of random ass folks from there like Theresa Randle, Fred Williamson, Jr Walker and The All Stars, Deneice Williams, and Raj from What’s Happening. Then you got some white folks like Greg Popovich and Karen McDougal who from there too but try to hide it.

Nah. That sounds good for daps, but in reality there isn’t anywhere to eat like that in Gary. Fried Chicken is pretty much one of your main options. Gary just got a legit grocery store in the last 10-12 years after not having one for decades. And the one that opened really ain’t even all that. You think it’s restaurants and catering services up there to choose from? Breh it’s 2 McDonalds, 1 Popeyes, 1 Church’s, 2 KFC’s in a city of 80K now, probably closer to a 100K when Mike did this. A few random mom and pop owned spots serving up more fried chicken/fish and like 2 Sharks and JJ’s serving up even more of the same. It might be under 15 actual legit places to get food at in the whole city. Gary a real food desert breh, if you don’t have a car to drive to the next town over you subsisting off of McD’s, Popeyes and Polish Sausage.
