Netflix Orders ‘Dear White People’ Series From Justin Simien Based On His Movie

Dear White People is coming to television. Netflix has given a 10-episode order to a half-hour comedy series based on Justin Simien’s acclaimed debut indie feature. Simien is writing the series adaptation and will direct the first episode. The series, which will begin filming later this year for a 2017 debut, will be produced by Lionsgate, whose sister company Roadside Attractions released the original film in 2014.

“We’re proud to expand our partnership with our friends at Netflix on a comedy that tackles racial themes with a combination of intelligence, honesty, irreverence and wit,” said Chris Selak, EVP, Television, Lionsgate TV. “Our original film with Roadside Attractions catapulted Dear White People into the national conversation about race, and Justin and the rest of the creative team have an opportunity to expand this world and bring its timely and universal themes to a global television audience.”

:snoop: this the same movie where that mixed female fakes being pro black to cover up for dating a cac?

That's what you got out of it? She wasn't being pro black as a disguise breh. She genuinely felt how she felt but she was obviously conflicted in how she portrayed it. The whole movie was about people finding their identity and their voice, as is what happens in college. And that not everyone is one thing and not everyone fits into a role or a box no matter how hard we try to. Plus the creator wants to do the show in the same vein as a different world so if we get something like that on TV again mixed with the irreverence of arrested development, im down

I think that's part of what the movie was saying though. That she was a contradiction much like everyone else. But never once did i feel like she didnt believe what she said or wasn't convicted to her causes. Just a lost kid who thought they knew everything like every dumb kid in college. no offense to anyone in college

I think a series has potential. Making it a series gives it a chance to tackle a variety of topics and focus on different characters. I don't recall the movie being really funny though, so I imagine it will be a mixture of drama and comedy. At the very least, it will be different than most shows on TV.

Thought the movie wasn't as smart as it thought it was. But it was decent. But I definitely don't agree on the 'if you date someone of another race you can't be pro black' stuff.

Yeah, it was like not funny at all. Like I usually like when the marketing is one thing and the movie is another but not in this case.
It is an OK movie and I respect the attempt but execution wise it was just meh. It definitely doesn't need a TV show.

Movies and tv shows
Movie was just okay to me, not cause she was a mixed chick dating a white guy on the low & fought tooth and nail about the appearance of black people vs. how we are in various of black culture (videos, IG, 'reality' tv, etc..) I guess it was Tyler James Willams that kinda annoyed me how he was Chris (he got clowned the entire movie)but he really wasn't Chris cause he basically let people to. Her pro-black friends kinda got on my nerves too, like alright cam the fukk down already, damn :martin:.

I was very suprised with Teyanna's role( I saw this days after watching Chi-raq :scusthov:) and how they were opposite roles. She even wore a hair hat in the movie!!! :gladbron:That is prolly what saved the movie for me. Umm no lesbo (if that's even necessary) cause she's a pretty girl, no #teamdarkskin cause that's not why I liked her character either. I just like her as an actress period.

This is one of those 1 & done movies; one that you watch when nothing else is on. I'm gonna pass on the series, it may cause a an outcry from other races asking where their version of the show is....

didn't MTV already try it with a special that focused on white tears? :lupe:
