Debbie Allen Considers Bringing Back 'A Different World' | Essence.com

Would you want to see it?

The iconic TV sitcom A Different World is nearing its 25th anniversary this October, and director Debbie Allen thinks it's time to "recap the groundbreaking series."

"We need to revisit this wonder arena and get my crew back," she tweeted, adding that a show like it is "missed in TV today."

"Can I get an Amen?" she wrote. "I get enough amen's maybe Bill Cosby, Marcy, and Tom will let us put Hillman back on the block."
A Different World was Cosby Show spinoff that aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and soon became the #2 ranked show in African-American households, according to the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Allen based most of the show on her days at Howard University

rarely do shows work when they try to remake it, but I would watch. NO chance a show like that comes on Network TV tho.

With the right writers, I'd give it a try. I'm not sure a major network would greenlight this though like they did the Cosby's and the original Different World. Black themed shows don't even seem to make it on the desk of NBC, ABC etc these days. It would have to have serious support from someone such as Quincy Jones to be given a fair chance.

ONe thing I ironically don't want to see is it on BET, TBS, USA or some other second rate station.

don't know why she would need to "reboot" it, just bring it back with a new crop of kids and continue it. TBS might take a chance since they seem to be the only network giving black shows a chance. Most of the cast isn't doing anything in front of the camera right now, you could probably bring them back with no problem. Have not seen Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison or Darryl M. Bell in anything lately. Kadeem(Dwayne Wade) was already teaching classes when the show last aired. Have him be the Dean of Engineering or something, let him and Whitley's kid start college at Hillman. Its not far fetched that most of the characters could be still living close to Hillman once they graduated and started their careers. If they could get Will and Jada behind it as producers, you could bring in Jada's old character also...

I'm thinking that "reboot" means that Cosby/Denise/Dwayne/Whitley never existed, i would want them to continue in the same world if that makes sense and not recast them. In regards to Will and Jada, they have produced a few black shows/movies with "All of Us" on the CW, "ATL" and "The Secret Life of Bees" which had a majority Black cast..

More diverse shows on the air is a good thing, I get there is some name value in A Different World, but I would rather they do something that is maybe influenced by it.

But when was the last time you seen a BLACK show remade?
irrelevant

they could do what 90210 has done with having the OG cast members as adults in the school/community

I would have them apart of the show but as recurring characters, not as cast members.
