On December 17, 2000, during a 17-0 victory by the San Francisco 49ers over the Chicago Bears, San Francisco’s wide receiver Terrell Owens sets a new league record of 20 catches in a single game.
Owens shattered the 50-year-old NFL record of 18 receptions in a game by catching 20 passes. His 283 yards were also only 6 shy of the franchise record that Rice set in 1988.
"T.O. is an awesome receiver, as he's proven all year," quarterback Jeff Garcia said. "Today turned out to be a day when they both shared the spotlight. It definitely seemed like a sign that Jerry is passing the torch onto Terrell."
Owens had a practice run with the torch in 1997, when Rice played in only three games because of a knee injury. Owens finished that season with 60 catches for 936 yards. The next season he topped 1,000 yards. This year he's more than doubled the output of any other 49ers receiver with 1,416 yards.
Sunday was just one more accomplishment, one more glimpse into the future, but even in a personal moment of history making, Owens chose to downplay his success.
"It didn't feel like I broke the record for receptions. The main focus today was Jerry," Owens said. "When Jerry was standing at the podium, I felt the emotion go right through me."

Amazingly I couldn't find a single video of all 20 catches
