This is exactly, why I think sports in important @Matt504 .

I rather young cats gear their energy towards trying kill this, than being in the street.

Also cats know that they have to go to college to really compete. And the process to being eligible is constantly being explained to cats. Young cats know nowadays that, that keeping a decent GPA, is a gateway to eligibility.
