I finally got around to listening to this album and this is best summary of what I thought about this album. "If you wanna brag...that's fine. Just brag better. Do me that favor." I understand that Jay-Z is not the same Jay-Z that was on Reasonable Doubt. He compares himself to a god and I don't think he is saying that without sincerity. He is not where he was mentally, socially, economically or as far as his realm of influence can go which is worldwide. He made a smart business move by constructing an album with good beats that do land somewhere between the trap and euro-pop with some really schmedium lyrics.

I feel like people are reaching to find things wrong with the album, and generally that's how a lot of people listen to music today.

I thought it was a good album :manny: Am I gonna run around yelling it's a classic? Of course not, but I'm also not sitting there with a notepad like, "That's wrong...that's wrong...he could've done that...he could've maybe stretched out that last bar...The reference about the Ocean isn't technically correct.." :what:

People have ALWAYS looked at music this way, because music is an artform, just like movies, television, books, or modern art. You might not care because you don't take it that seriously, but a lot of people do. Just like I'm not gonna pay 10 dollars to see any random movie, I'm not paying to hear rappers lackadaisically spit rhymes and call that shyt music. I want quality.

1. That's not a review.
2. People care more about their opinion than yours.

:manny: That's upon your discretion. Music is a form of entertainment, but shouldn't be taken as seriously as someone would take the Bible seriously. It's not THAT serious. Let alone...this is f*ckin Jay-Z. What else does anyone really expect from him at this point of his career? People will either love or hate him like they have before. But the way people are bickering about this album is like if it's his worst album to date which (at least IMO) it clearly isn't. So he didn't drop a 5 Star classic...sue him :win:

This somewhat, but more specifically because it's Jay-Z..one of the most shallow hip-hop artists of all time lol, and the fact that he now has a daughter, all he still manages to do is talk about himself and his possessions, people are expecting a change, but it isn't going to happen.

I thought the album was pretty good, but not great. Album is well done and interesting enough musically to hold my attention. I'm not blown away, but it's not wack at all, which Jay is perfectly capable of dropping.

I will say that on a 1st listen, the lyrics are very underwhelming. But after that, I stop caring about it all that much. He spit a few bars at times on this album though.

I had this convo with a friend the other day. IM a Jay-Z and I actually like MCHG, but I mentioned that if you do braggadocious rap your word has to be :gladbron:...otherwise the listener is just left with you bragging instead of being distracted by the actual wordplay (which could be off putting).

This is even truer when you take into account that now the things that he's bragging about is Eurocentric, like if he's rapping about trips to Miami or Jordan's or Cristal or Benz's the listener can put himself in those shoes bc those are easier wins (yeah benz's and shyt cost money but they are attainable). When your rapping about the South of France and Picasso's and shyt if it's not done cleverly people cant feel become bored and irritated especially if you keep repeating the same braggadocious shyt over the course of a few years and albums...which probably explains why people's reactions (hate) is so strong when it comes to him, only thing I cant explain is why people who don't like his music and raps keep listening over and over :lupe:
