I don't necessarily need music with substance, but I do need music that is not ignorant.

As far as brain dead and mindless music, the South is the king and reigns supreme.

People praise Young Thug and Future, and the crazy production coming out the South, but I can't listen to any of it...most of these rappers I only heard 3 or 4 songs. Its garbage.
Dudes acting like someone is MAKING THEM listen to this stuff though?

But on the same token, people call Thug and Future "brainless" but won't give them credit in their creativity and dexterity in trying to take something stale and try something new. Its not like they're not rapping about the same old tired shyt anyways, at least they're trying to flip it a new way. Can't say the same for the sleepy time rappers who'd rather bore you with equally aimless and unimpressive bars and punchlines.

Something else just came to my mind. I think what seperates somebody like Kendrick from somebody like Hopsin is that he can talk about issues and have it not come off as being preachy. He's also a flawed individual and points out his own personal flaws in his music. Kendrick to me seems like a guy who's trying to find answers rather than someone trying to force their opinions on someone.

Guys like Immortal Technique and Hopsin seem to think that they can do no wrong and if you don't agree with what they are saying then you are a brainwashed sheep. Hopsin especially thinks he's some sort of gift to the world. It just doesn't work if you come off that way. You have to be able to connect to people on a human level rather than insult their intelligence

This is wack man. Dude has no charisma, the lyrics from a technical standpoint are simply decent, and in terms of substance he is spitting intro Africana Studies raps. The whole "they have us trapped", "capitalism is a problem", "hip hop has our youths mentally enslaved" are tired tropes trotted out for Black middle class backpacker folks who "found" their blackness when they finally read Fanon freshman year.

Substance is an overrated argument.

Look. I'm more intelligent than probably 80-90% of any rap artist. EVER. More educated, etc.

Theres nothing they can tell me or put me on that I don't know about. Its been like this since I was in college when I realized this. I'm not an idiot.

Conscious music isn't for me. Its for people who THINK they have something to say.

But no one is obligated to make music that seems to address sociopolitical matters and then proclaim it as better.

on the other hand i have had 7 year olds say something that made me think back and change how i look at things...
