I came across this post and was reminded how cool deserted or empty towns or cities are:

And they have deserted towns all over the country. I think the population aged out of small towns and moved into the cities. I used to work in random Japanese towns hours away from major cities. Blocks of deserted houses and businesses, empty streets…there’s one famous deserted island off the coast of Nagasaki.

I was reminded of the ghost cites in China:
Abandoned architectural marvels in China's largest ghost town
12 eerie photos of enormous Chinese cities completely empty of people

With that said, feel free to share any places you know that would qualify as being a deserted or empty town or city. :whoo:

Why was it abandoned? It’s kind of creepy.

Here’s one:

put it on mute (the music is annoying)

I honestly don't know in regards to the one in Japan exactly. The ones in China are similar to the ones I think in either Indonesia or Malaysia where the issue was a bunch of issues, some economic and some other ones.

Cahaba, Alabama

Old Cahawba was Alabama's first permanent capital, from 1819-1826. (Huntsville was a temporary capital before this. In 1826 the capital moved to Tuscaloosa, and to Montgomery in 1846, per Encyclopedia of Alabama.) Following the Civil War, Cahawba was more or less abandoned by wealthy white residents, and came into use by freed slaves seeking refuge and a place to congregate.

Freed Black people used the town's abandoned churches and schools to register to vote, hold political rallies, and even rewrite Alabama's constitution. A former slave, Jordan Hatcher, took part in the latter. Around this time the county seat was moved to Selma, which folks will recognize from 1965's Martin Luther King-led non-violent Civil Rights march. In the 1980s the Alabama Historic Commission recognized the importance of Old Cahawba, and began working to have it preserved.

There are actually two of them off the coast of Nagasaki. They look similar. One of them used to be a site for chemical weapons testing during WW2 and it was abandoned for obvious reasons after the war.

The larger one used to be a factory town during the height of the Japanese economy in 70s-80s. Mitsubishi had a plant there and built houses, shops, a hospital, and parks for it's employees. Once the recession destroyed the Japanese economy in the 90s the Mitsubishi conglomerate plant that was the lifeblood of the town was shut down, kinda like how automakers shut down and abandoned Detroit. But unlike Detroit, no inhabitants chose to stay on the island city. That's why it is in the delapitated state you see it in.

Both islands are off limits for safety reasons, but can be visited with a govt samctioned tour guide. Also, if you got deep pockets you can rent out either of the 2 cities for events/concerts. I know for sure that a few zombie movies have been filmed out there.
