Detroit Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell was arrested Wednesday the same day a video surfaced showing an apparent student body slamming a high school security guard.
Cambell was charged with “assault and battery based on an incident that took place inside the school at dismissal time,” Assistant Superintendent Steven Wasko told The News on Thursday.
“Detroit Public Schools Police Department is investigating and additionally the district's Student Code of Conduct process will determine the infraction and the appropriate disciplinary actions,” Wasko said.
Wasko declined to further elaborate on the circumstances of the incident.
Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Maria Miller said Thursday morning the prosecutor’s office hasn’t received any information on Campbell.
Campbell, who is 6-3 and 190 pounds, led Cass Tech to back-to-back Division 1 state championships in football in 2011 and 2012.
Campbell has committed to Michigan State for its 2015 class.
In November, Campbell was suspended from school for three to five days by school administrators following an incident that took place after Cass Tech's 28-0 loss to Detroit Catholic Central in a Division 1 semifinal last season.
Campbell was also suspended for the first football game next season.
Campbell threw punch at a C.C. player, according to Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher.
