Add another name in the ring for Detroit Pistons coaching candidates.
Yahoo! Sports reporter Shams Charania posted on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that the Pistons plan to interview TNT analyst and former NBA champion Kenny Smith for the head coaching job
Smith, 53, has been a studio analyst with the popular "Inside the NBA" show since the late 1990s. He also provides analysis during CBS/Turner's coverage of the NCAA tournament and contributes to NBA TV.
A first-round draft pick out of North Carolina in 1987, Smith made his name as the starting point guard for the Houston Rockets, which won back-to-back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995.
He played nine games with the Pistons in the 1996-97 season, his final season in the NBA.
More: Kenny Smith says he’ll be an NBA head coach in less than 5 years
Smith reportedly interviewed for the New York Knicks coaching job last month, though the Knicks went with David Fizdale.
The Free Press reported on Wednesday that the Pistons will utilize a team of consultants to observe coaching candidates next week at the Auburn Hills practice facility. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that former NBA coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Jim Lynam will consult the Pistons in their head coaching search.
With the Orlando Magic announcing on Wednesday that they will hire Steve Clifford as their head coach, there are just two openings left in the NBA: Detroit and Toronto.
The Pistons are still searching for a president/GM after firing Stan Van Gundy earlier this month. During one of the TNT studio shows, Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal stumped for the Pistons to consider Basketball Hall of Famer and all-time great Piston Isiah Thomas to run the front office.
Since then, the Pistons hired Ed Stefanski as an advisor.
